Wicked Winifred - Katie Mettner

Well, this is a surprise! I asked Tobi to host my cover reveal a few weeks ago for Wicked Winifred, which was supposed to release on October 1st, but Amazon had other ideas and instead of putting it up for pre-order, they published it. So, today we are having a release day party! Whooo hooo!

I thought I would introduce Winifred and Flynn a little bit before you check out the blurb and review. A lot of people have asked me for a Halloween book for the Snowberry Series, as it's the one holiday I haven't done yet. Halloween isn't big in my family, never has been, so the thought of writing a Halloween book was a little like *shrug, who cares*. I really couldn't even wrap my mind around what you write for a Halloween romance. Do you have a witch fall in love with a werewolf? A vampire become addicted to the blood of a fairy woman? I'm not making fun of anyone here, but I truly didn't have a clue and that's why I never attempted to write one before. Then this past spring I was writing Liberty Belle and in walked Winifred Papadopoulos to the bakery, and my heart. If you read Liberty Belle you may be thinking, "there is no way I'm going to like this book. Winifred is so, well, wicked!" And it's true, she was atrocious to all the townspeople of Snowberry, and while not an excuse, there is a reason. In Wicked Winifred, we find out what that reason is. When the Phantom and the Wicked Witch find themselves sipping hidden scotch and contemplating why a person needs four showerheads, things turn sultry, fast. Suddenly faced with the idea of having to take their masks off and reveal themselves, and what they are hiding, to each other they both know its a chance they have to take. A few months, quite a few dates and few unexpected turn of events later, their Halloween night arrives, and goes horribly wrong. Winifred is certain she made a mistake trusting Flynn, but when she's visited by ghosts from her past she starts to see the bigger picture. It turns out that writing a Halloween story wasn't that hard once I discovered that most powerful thing we see that night is a mask.

I will admit that when I started Wicked Winifred I intended to keep my little hints about faith out of the story. It was a Halloween book after all, and there isn't much God has to do with that holiday. Flynn and Winifred had different ideas, though. Soon I had a Jewish woman unsure if a great power exists, and a Christian man who knew exactly what higher power to believe in. I was surprised when I finished the book and went back to the beginning to discover what Winifred and Flynn knew all along. Even I didn't see that coming! Is this Christian romance? NO, absolutely not. However, sometimes things happen in life that can't be explained on the earthly plane and that is exactly what Winifred, Flynn, and I, discover in their story.

My name is Winifred Papadopoulos and I do dating the way most women do the gynecologist, under duress and with a fake smile on my face. My life was already a disaster, and to make things worse, my best friend, Kate, dragged me kicking and screaming to speed dating, in costume. Have you ever heard of such a ridiculous thing? There was no way I was getting out of it, so I dressed as the wicked witch, warts and all. I’m known as Wicked Winifred by most in Snowberry, a reputation I’ve already perfected without even putting on the hat. Here's the thing, I'm not wicked; I'm simply misunderstood. The truth is, my heart was broken beyond repair when I was sixteen, and I don’t intend to let anyone get that close to me ever again. I couldn’t foresee that sharing a two-minute conversation with the most handsome ‘Phantom’ I had ever met would be the catalyst that turned my life upside down.

A downed power pole sets off a series of events that I never saw coming. Drastic times called for drastic measures, and with the help of one very pregnant florist, I found my ‘Phantom’ again. Our masks off, and our hearts open, we only have until Halloween to decide if the scars we both hide will bring us together or tear us apart. Grab your broomstick and hang on tight. This is going to be a bumpy ride...

When I started this book I said that Katie Mettner would have to work miracles to get me to like Winifred.  In previous books in the Snowberry Series she's highly unlikable and extremely mean.  Even at the start of the story she was mean.  As events unfold and she begins to change and meets a wonderful man.  Though he's not the definition of America's standards of beauty he's gorgeous inside and out.  Flynn, oh how I love his supportive yet not forceful manner with Winifred.  Winifred grows emotionally through out the story. As the story progressed I thought, well, I like her now.  However, it will be close to impossible to make me love her.  Dang if Katie Mettner didn't nail it.  I had Wicked Winifred finished in about 30 hours with a little sleep overnight.  If you're looking for an excellent story of love, and perfect redemption this is the story for you.
I give Wicked Winifred...
